Hmmm, it could be the effect of any neuromodulator not just dopamine. In our model, however, the modulator should somehow be tied to average excitatory cell activity and be a sensor of that. There are many putative candidates for this like for instance nitric oxide (NO), but there are others. For the model it does not really matter which one as long as it is shared amongst neurons.
